In '1408', horror veteran Stephen King revisits elements of his early classic 'The Shining', by basically asking "What would it actually be like to stay in Room 217? The result is naturally a battle of wits between whatever truly lurks in there, and the visitor's own mind. While it is definitely one of the better US horror offerings of late, I found '1408' to be largely derivative, partly from King's own work, but also of other horror films past.
Every step along the way, I felt ground being re-tread. It's inevitable that someone as prolific as Stephen King would end up retreading old ground, and it's certainly unintentional.
Nonetheless, '1408' was a good attempt to move away from the mindless gorefests that typify so many American horror films. That automatically elevates it by a level. Then there's the always-excellent John Cusack who turns in a very convincing performance as the sceptical paranormal investigator/writer who takes the challenge no-one else would. On balance, I think he's the main reason I'll be able to walk away from '1408' without being too disappointed.
Overall, if you seen/read a lot of King not to mention the genre films of recent decades, then there's not a lot new here - more the rearrangement of old ideas that suggest something new. It will entertain however, and I like to think of it as a good introduction to the genre for new fans.

When you look at Scott Frank's writing credits --especially "Minority Report" and "Out Of Sight"-- it is really no surprise that this is an unusually smart and entertaining crime drama.
It is an "adult movie" in the best sense of that term.
This is a beautifully bleak looking movie where all the color is in the characters and their behavior. The acting is top notch. I've never seen this Levitt kid before, but he captures emotional and intellectual numbness with a finesse I haven't seen since Guy Pierce's work in "Memento". It is a tough role and he hits it out of the park. Jeff Daniels is Oscar-worthy as his best friend and Matthew Goode plays a guy who you know sheds more than one skin each year. Isla Fisher is a welcome ray of sunlight in this dark tale source IMDb.

If you're a true fan of the mystery thriller, however, this movie delivers in spades. I had at least four theories of what was really going on during the course of this movie, and while one of them was on a parallel track to the real root of the action, I didn't quite get it right. That's unusual. I've watched enough mysteries and enough thrillers over the last few decades that I almost ALWAYS have it figured out well before the end. Here, I didn't. I was completely torn between wondering if Pacino's character was being threatened or manipulated by the bad guy(s), or if he himself was the bad guy and those around him were working to make him slip up and reveal himself source IMDb.

I saw this movie at Showest back in March and was really impressed. My initial thought was that this movie would be a cheesy rip of "Dexter" or any other "Behind the Serial" type of Movie/Series. Dane Cook isn't his predictable wacky self, and actually helps round out the film with his twisted comic/perverted view of serial killing. Take every film that you have seen by Costner, Cook and Moore and throw it out the window. This film is surprisingly original and has plenty of plot twists to keep you alert and anxious to see where the story will head next.

The film has a similar feel to The Virgin Suicides, which also focuses its artistic energies on creating rich landscapes and detailed portraits of its characters (rather than character development). Director Nick DiBella's choice to prioritize style is a good one given his strength with the camera. It's no wonder that the protagonist in his co-writing debut is a photographer.
Because of its sophisticated cinematography and laudable go at film noir in color, Cherry Crush deserves to be offered to an art house audience. The story of a rich kid bewitched by a mysterious pauper isn't a terribly sympathetic, but putting the failures of the plot concept aside, DiBella captures his subject well. source IMDb

This one made me make a comment, its an unusual film, I won't go into specifics, but when you watch it you will see what I mean. Its not the usual Hollywood blockbuster, and that's what makes it great.
Watch it and it will no doubt make you question a few things in your own life. Any film that makes you do that, is certain to be a great film.
