Deck The Halls is a family about one-upsmanship, jealously, clashing neighbors, home decoration... and the true spirit of the holidays. For cloverdale, Massachusetts optometrist Steve Finch (Matthew Broderick), no time of the year can compare to the glory of the christmas season. And, for many years now, he's carried on series of the heartfelt but hokey Yuletide traditions that his family - wife Kelly(Kristin Davis), daughter Madison (Alia Shawkat). Despite his family's exhausted protests, superorganized Steve has the December calender chock full with everything from shooting the Finch's annual Christmas card photo, to their ritual tree harvesting and neighborhood caroling night. There's also schduled time for shopping, "personal reflection, "and the town's yearly Winterfest carnival, which Steve joyously oversees
But Steve's Christmas bliss is suddenly destroyed when slippery car salesman Buddy Hall (Danny Devito) moves in next door and Steve finds himself going toe-to-toe with his new neighbor. Buddy quickly begns to undermine Steve's dominance as the local "King of Christmas" when he sets out to festoon his new house with enough glowing holiday lights so it will be visible from outer space. We're talking a lot of lights, here!
But why stop at lights? Motivated by the celebrity he's achieving with his dazzling, megawatt decorations, Buddy adds a live manger scene complete with donkeys, cows, sheep, and an imported camel, while continuing wo wreak havoc on an infuriated steve in a host of creatively twisted ways. Though Steve is in meltdown mode over Buddy's holiday shenanigans (never mind that Buddy's tapping into the Finches' electricity to power his decor!), wife Kelly has bonded with Buddy's brassy better half Tia (Kristin Chenoweth), while Madison has buddied up to the Hall's sexy, dim-bulb twin daugthers Ashley and Emily (Sabrina & Kelly Alridge), who light up the life of younger carter as well. Kelly and Tia and the kids become increasingly impatient, though, with Steve and Buddy's escalating rivalry and eventually threaten to pull the plug on the guys' entire Christmas season.
Can Steve and Buddy declare a ceasefire before the holidays are ruined altogether?, or will they continue their one-upsmanhip until personal victory is achieved?

The film follows the tale of young penguin Cody Maverick who loves to surf, yet lives in the Artic. One day a talent scout for the annual Penguin World Surfing Championship finds young Cody and brings him to Penguin Island, the penguin surfing capital. There, Cody must compete against the best of the best, but he can't do it without the help of a mentor, an old famous surfer.
The coolest thing is that it's filmed documentary style, so the camera is a little wobbly, and the "film crew" conducts hilarious interviews. Not only that, but the visuals are spectacular. Imagine the painstaking process of creating wave upon wave of water, frame by frame, it is simply amazing. The main voice talents – Shia LeBeouf, Zooey Deschanel, and Jeff Bridges – fit their characters so well. As does all the other voices in the film. But what I liked most was how they didn't let you stop laughing. In the first ten minutes I laughed probably thirty times, and not just chuckles, no, a few times I got close to tears.
"Surf's Up" also has a great message about going for your dreams and never giving up, but it's not like we've never heard that one before.

This was a very comical movie. I went into the viewing with mild expectations, after all the previews were decent and Cal from 40-Year Old Virgin was to play a lead role. These expectations were far surpassed. The film did not loose steam at all as the plot progressed, and the audience was enthralled throughout in addition to being thoroughly entertained. The movie also had aspects that appealed to the more serious issue at hand. There were an abundance of one-liners and the film was very well written and produced. All in all, this is the best comedy after a comedic drought lasting from the summer of 2005 with the departure of Wedding Crashers and 40 Year Old Virgin from screens. This is a must see and a great relief to those that enjoy a good laugh and have been neglected for two years.

Lest be duped by the trailers that make it seem a romantic comedy set in the world of high-stakes gambling, one should approach "Lucky You" as more of a movie about poker with a generous amount of father-son conflict thrown in for good measure. The romantic angle is just an arbitrarily (in fact, awkwardly) placed distraction that sticks out like a sore thumb (hint: Drew Barrymore's character is good for only around 20-30 minutes of this 2-hour movie).
Huck Cheever (Eric Bana) is a regular high-stakes poker player in Las Vegas whose skills in reading body languages of his opponents is hampered by his rashness. Constantly in the shadow of his estranged father L.C. (Robert Duvall), a two-time World Series of Poker champion who never fails to rub in his son's weakness, Huck falls for Billie (Barrymore) - a Vegas newbie who's just got a job singing in a bar. Problem is, Billie's cynicism-free personality clashes with Huck's callous opportunistic character.
And it goes without saying that as cards are dealt and the stakes are raised, there will be some fixings to occur among Huck and the two people around him.
Strangely, after being in projects with involving narratives, director Curtis Hanson and co-writer Eric Roth fail to draw any meaningful yarn with the characters. In fact, "Lucky You" works better when it sets its focus on the poker table, and not trying to deal with any of tepid characterizations. But such ambivalence ultimately leads to a hollow feeling.
For those who enjoy watching poker, it might be a worthy deal (at least the final act). But for anyone else, considering the people involved in this project, it leaves the feeling of an empty hand.
